For Cape Town bodybuilder Jean van der Westhuizen (40), the secret to having a great, muscular body lies in a very strict diet – especially during the run-up to a competition.

"People often think that a bodybuilder's body looks so good because he or she spends hours in the gym. On the contrary. The appearance is mostly thanks to the food one eats," Jean told Kaap Rapport in an interview.
At the moment, Jean is one of the top bodybuilders in the Western Cape. He fared particularly well at this year's South African BodyBuilding Championships, held at Grand West in Goodwood.
He explains that one should aim to put on as much weight as possible out of season. "During this time, one can cheat a bit with the foods you eat, as the main goal is to increase your weight," he says.
However, in the weeks before a competition, Jean is a lot more disciplined when it comes to eating. He restricts his meals to fat-free foods, making sure that he includes quite a lot of vegetables.
Of course, Jean spends quite a bit of time in the gym – about two hours every day. "But only 30% of your bodybuilding results can be attributed to the exercises you do in the gym," Jean says.
