Who is the Gay & Lesbian expert?
Glenn de Swardt is the Project Director of Health4Men, a non-profit project of Anova Health Institute, providing free sexual healthcare to MSM (men who have sex with men, irrespective of their sexual orientation). In partnership with the Department of Health and funded by PEPFAR / USAID, Health4Men established the first public-sector clinic dedicated to MSM sexual health in Africa. All Health4Men services are free, including access to antiretroviral treatment for MSM living with HIV. Health4Men has developed into a centre of excellence in HIV prevention, treatment and care for MSM in Africa. In addition, the organisation provides training, mentorship and technical support to diverse health service providers and policy makers.
Glenn has worked as a gay rights activist and professional counsellor addressing gay men’s mental health concerns. He regularly writes articles on topical issues for the gay media and he has consulted to various organisations on MSM sexual and mental health, including the World Health Organisation (WHO), the Human Sciences Research Council (HSRC), the Medical Research Council (MRC) and the Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation.
In his free time Glenn is involved in various gay projects. He is the past Chairperson of Cape Town Pride, a past President of Cape Town’s gay and lesbian business forum (GALACTTIC: Gay And Lesbian Association of Cape Town Tourism, Industry and Commerce) and is the founder of the Pride Shelter Trust, a non-profit organisation establishing Africa’s first shelter for gay, lesbian and transgender people.
