Whilst at university I obtained two degrees namely BA(HMS) & BA(HMS)(Hons)Biokinetics and participated in the following courses which I have passed successfully:

  • During my honours year I was awarded the Trophy prize for the Best Practical Biokinetic Student presented by the University of Pretoria's Institute of Sport Research.

    I successfully passed the International course CSCS (Certified Strength and Conditioning Specialist) in March 2002 and am presently registered with the National Strength & Conditioning Association in America.

    At present I am the Biokineticist and CSCS to the South African National Swimming team

    PREVIOUS WORKING EXPERIENCE

    South African Rugby Football Union (SARFU) – July – September 1999

    Involved in the evaluation of the IRB (International Rugby Board) experimental rule being applied to the University of Pretoria’s Rugby hostel league. Here we are evaluating a new rule that could be applied to rugby internationally as from next year.

    Post Graduate Studies (During)
    University of Pretoria, Institute for Sport Research – February 2000
    Assisted in biokinetic practices working with and observing biokineticists in practice. This included cardiac rehabilitation, rehabilitation of neurological patients, patients with orthopaedic problems, rehabilitation of sportsmen and women with injuries, exercise prescription, sports aptitude and SISA testing (of both boxers and tennis players). I was also involved with the presentation of water therapy classes to elderly patients, patients with injury and those individuals seeking general body fitness.

    University of Pretoria, Institute for Sport Research Strength & Conditioning Gymnasium – March 2000 Work included evaluation of individuals fitness levels and body composition, exercise programme prescription and assisting gymnasium members in correct training methods. Assisted in the general ‘running’ of the gymnasium (taking in money and signing up memberships).

    University of Pretoria- TUKS Netball
    Performed first-aid and injury treatment during coaching clinics presented by TUKS Netball club for junior and high schools during the March school holidays. Taught me how to react quickly and appropriately to first-aid and injury situations.

    1 Military Hospital SANDF – April 2000
    Assisted in biokinetic practices working with and observing biokineticists in practice. This included cardiac rehabilitation (1st, 2nd and 3rd phase), rehabilitation of neurological patients, patients with orthopaedic problems, rehabilitation of sportsmen and women with injuries and exercise prescription. I was also involved with the observation and presentation of water therapy classes to pregnant patients, patients with injury (neck and back) and those individuals seeking general body fitness. I was fortunate to see how the different medical disciplines can work hand-in-hand in perfect harmony without any of them overlapping especially during the sport clinics (the disciplines involved were medical docters, physiotherapists, biokineticists and those from the orthopaedic laboratory).

    Centre for Diabetes and Endocrinology – May 2000
    Was able to see the interaction found in a multi-disciplinary medical field of Diabetes. Here we assisted in the gymnasium with exercise prescription, monitoring and modification especially in diabetic patients. Assisted in overall health evaluations and stress ECG’s. I was also able to attended patient evaluation by podiatrists and educators thus observing the interactions between the different fields. I attended the Advanced Course in Diabetes during this working period.

    Unisa Biokinetics and Fitness Centre – June 2000
    Work included evaluation of individual’s fitness levels and body composition, exercise programme prescription and assisting gymnasium members in correct training methods. Assisted in the general ‘running’ of the gymnasium (taking in money, signing up of new memberships, opening the gymnasium and general administration).

    University of Pretoria Sport Institute Student Gymnasium – July 2000
    Work included evaluation of individual’s fitness levels and body composition, exercise programme prescription and assisting gymnasium members in correct training methods. Assisted in the general ‘running’ of the gymnasium (taking in money and signing up memberships).

    SASSU Badminton tournament – University of Pretoria
    Performed first-aid and injury treatment during the SASSU Badminton championships held at the University of Pretoria sports complex during July 2000. Taught me how to react quickly and appropriately to first-aid and injury situations.

    De Wilgers Hospital, Cardiac rehabilitation Unit - August 2000
    Aided the rehabilitation unit with patient education, with respect to cardiac problems, healthier lifestyles, and improved fitness and health. Also assisted in presenting and helping exercise sessions for cardiac patients.

    Melanie Jacobs Physiotherapy - September 2000
    Assisted in the Biokinetics Section of the practice, helping people with various medical or orthopedic problems gain better quality of life through exercise. Working here I was able to see the close relationship that Biokineticists and Physiotherapists can and should have. Taught me the importance of proper interaction between different medical disciplines. • Beautiko, Academy of Beauty – Sports Therapy course Part time lecturing of certain modules of the Diploma in Sports Therapy presented by Beautiko, Academy of Beauty. Aspects covered include, Physical Fitness and Exercise, Sports Therapy, Basic Skeletal and Muscular Anatomy, Physical Fitness and Aerobic exercise, Fitness Evaluations and Resistance Training and Gym Instruction.

    POST STUDIES

    Institute of Sport Research, University of Pretoria - January 2001 & ongoing
    Job includes:

  • rehabilitation of patients with orthopaedic problems
  • rehabilitation of sportsmen and women with injuries
  • exercise prescription – elite sports population, sports aptitude and SISA (HPP) testing (Heading the Center of
  • Specialisation for Swimming, Boxing and Rowing at the Institute)
  • Work also includes evaluation of individual’s fitness levels and body composition, exercise programme prescription and assisting gymnasium members in correct training methods.

    I have also been involved with the presentation of water therapy classes to elderly patients, patients with injuries and those individuals seeking general body fitness.

    Pool / Aquatic recovery sessions is also part of the work requirements.

    I am involved in the strength and conditioning training of various swimmers which include the Tuks Aquatics Swimming Club, The Tuks Swimming Academy, The National Training Centre (Swimming South Africa) Squad & various Swimmers from in and around Pretoria, Johannesburg region and various towns and cities in South Africa.

    I also assist in the strength and conditioning of various other athletes which include boxers, rugby players, sprint kayakers, Lifesavers and Divers.

    I was also the division head for the Institutes Strength & Conditioning Gymnasium where I oversaw the work of two other Biokineticists, the Biokinetic Honours students of the University (during their rotations at this gymnasium) and more importantly the management of the gymnasium. This included the everyday running of the gymnasium, the fixing of apparatus and fundraising for the gymnasium.

    I am presently the Project Manager at the Institute for Sport Research. Here I co-ordinate all projects that take place. These include contract research, physiological testing of various sporting teams and setting up of new projects in the Institute.

    South African Swimming Squad – Mare Nostrum Tour to Europe – June 2001
    Here my job entailed bringing exercise science to the swimmers and applying it during high level international competition. I had to make sure that the swimmers recoveries were ideal so that they were ready to swim again the next day, lasting for a two week period. I also assisted them with general massaging as well as providing them with the appropriate stretching.

    South African Swimming Squad – Training Camp, Cape Town – June 2001
    Here My work entailed assisting these swimmers with identifying there Maximum Heart Rates and then accordingly determining their target training zones according to heart. I also assisted the swimmers with there stretching trying, along with the Physiotherapist to teach them when, how often and how to stretch properly. I was also involved in helping the swimmers with the Dryland Training which encompassed their resistance training in the gymnasium as well as their core stability work.

    International Institute for Sport Science & Fitness Training, South Africa – January 2002 onwards
    Part Time lecturer for IIFT presenting the practical classes of the Personal training and Fitness Instructors Course. The work entails teaching the individuals the principles of Strength training and the practical demonstration of Resistance training exercises in the Gymnasium as well as stretching techniques and stretches. Also involved in the administering the ‘Mock’ exam for those individuals writing the CSCS exam of the NSCA.

    Team South Africa, Commonwealth Games 2002, Manchester, England – July 2002
    Biokineticist to the Aquatics team at the Commonwealth Games in Manchester. My role was monitoring of the swimmers physiological responses, recovery strategies & overall well being during competition. Swim downs were monitored after every race by means of Heart Rate & Lactate testing, making sure that the swimmers had recovered completely and were ready to race again during the next session. Swimmers were able to talk to me and provide myself and in turn their coaches as to how they were feeling at any given moment during the competition. This Games also gave me the opportunity to talk to the Sport Scientists from the other countries and in so doing finding out what they are doing with there athletes.

    Protea National Swimming Team, FINA World Aquatic Championships, Barcelona, Spain – July 2003
    My role was monitoring of the swimmers physiological responses, recovery strategies & overall well being during competition and their pre competition training camp in Canet, France. Swim downs were monitored after every race by means of Heart Rate & Lactate testing, making sure that the swimmers had recovered completely and were ready to race again during the next session. I also provided the swimmers with massages to aid in the recovery process and assisted in any injury management.

    Athens Olympic Games 2004 – Performed physiological and biomechanical evaluations on the South African Olympic swimmers at the South African National Swimming Championships, Olympic Trials (Durban, April 2004) & pre Olympic training camp (High Performance Center – Pretoria April 2004). Provided feedback an assistance to these swimmers from the findings of the tests. Assisted in strength and stretching exercises to these swimmers. These swimmers obtained a gold Medal and world record (4 x 100m freestyle relay), silver and bronze medal (Roland Schoeman – 100m and 50m freestyle respectively).

    Trained the three South African Boxers through strength and conditioning programs. This was from May to August 2004.

  • Mozambique and Kenyan Olympic swimmer – performed physiological and biomechanical assessments and provided these swimmers with strength training. This was from April – August 2004.
  • Canoeing – worked with various sprint kayakers which entailed coaching (conditioning training) and sport specific strength training of these elite athletes.
