Fibre equals protection

ADVERTORIAL: Time and again we read about the importance of a good breakfast to kick-start the day and we frequently hear that breakfast is the most important meal of the day. While these two statements are unreservedly correct, we are now able to add a third fact to this prudent array.

Stay healthy on the inside by kick-starting the day with a cereal that provides a multibiotic effect - it’s that simple, says Suna Kassier, leading South African nutritionist.

Increasing the good bacteria
Essentially, a product like the Kellogg’s All-Bran range of cereals (Flakes, Hi-Fibre, Fruitful, Honey Nut Crunch and Toasted Muesli) that is rich in wheat bran helps to increase the amount of good bacteria in your digestive system, which contributes to your inner well-being and overall health. These multibiotic properties in wheat bran function to produce short-chain fatty acids which in turn reduces the pH levels in the colon helping to protect you against potential harmful bacteria found in the gut.

“During the healthy fermentation of wheat bran in the gut, the bacterial mass increases and so does the faecal bulk. This results in a shorter transit time of food waste, thereby preventing constipation,” says Suna.

“However, having said this, one must always remember that when eating foods that are rich in fibre, water consumption must be increased simultaneously to avoid exacerbated constipation,” she cautions.

Under normal circumstances the bacteria in the digestive system are in balance, but factors such as poor diet, stress and irregular bowel movements, may upset the status quo.

'Score a three in one'
Don’t fall prey to the sentiment that breakfast is a hassle. On the contrary, with any one product in the Kellogg’s All-Bran multibiotic range of cereals you can “score a three in one”:
1. Prepare your most important meal of the day in less than 15 seconds.
2. Enjoy the variety of tastes offered by a healthy, fibre-rich range.
3. Benefit from the multibiotic effect these products have to offer.
