Healthy and Lean for Life with Food and Supplements by Anne Myers
Anne Myers famously lost – and kept off – 90kg , and with that launched into a new career of writing, motivational speaking, lecturing, TV and radio programmes all focused on the same thing: when you've had it with fad diets, and had it with feeling flat and fat, and you're even driving yourself mad with your failure to get a grip – the solution is achingly simple.

Myers opens Chapter 1 of this book with the startling statement: 'Obesity, in its most basic form, can be classified as a nutrient deficiency.' Of course she's right. Obesity isn't only a function of excess; it's also a function of malnutrition; and an improved nutritional status is the first step towards normalising one's body to achieve a healthier weight. Myers has been criticised for allowing her flag to be tied to commercial masts, but that doesn't obviate the fact that she speaks good sense with a lot of heart, and understands (as many dieticians don't) that food is about pleasure, sharing and decadence. This a good read, and a good tool: it includes a useful glycaemic index chart and two-week low-GI eating plan; charts on food groups and portion sizes, fat content lists and more.
