With leftover Christmas trifle and roast leg of lamb coming out of your ears, it can seem easier to leave the food out for anyone who gets hungry. But food left on the kitchen table can become contaminated and cause food poisoning.

Take action: Refrigerate hot foods within two hours after cooking. If the food has been sitting out longer than that, throw it out. Put a date on leftovers when you put them in the fridge and eat them within three to five days after preparation.
