Weekly tip – Making cheese last
Last updated: Tuesday, May 23, 2006 PrintCheese is an excellent source of calcium, important in preventing osteoporosis. What can you do to ensure that the cheese you buy stays in top form until you have a chance to enjoy it?
Take action:
The fridge is generally the best place to store cheese. Note that hard cheeses, like cheddar and Gouda, should be stored in the warmest part of the fridge. This is usually the top shelf or the fridge door. Ensure that cheeses always remain tightly wrapped in cling film, so that none of the parts are exposed to air. Before serving hard cheese, allow it to stand at room temperature for an hour or two. However, softer cheeses, like ricotta and cottage cheese, should be stored in cooler parts of the fridge, such as the centre, back part, and should be served cold.
