Research into the factors that cause tooth decay has shown much progress in the past 30 years. Originally, sugar was the main culprit blamed for tooth decay. Now we know that many types of food cause decay, simply because they're "sticky". Most carbohydrates such as bread, biscuits, dried fruit and sweets will stick to your teeth, causing decay.

Snack on foods that hold less of a cavity risk such as cheese, nuts, popcorn, and vegetables; rinse your teeth after meals; chew sugarless gum for a few minutes after meals; and use dental floss to remove food particles.
