At last: scientists have created a "tear-free" onion using biotechnology to switch off the gene behind the enzyme that makes us cry, according to a report by Sapa-AFP. But until the miracle vegetable hits our shop shelves, what can you do to reduce your onion tears?

Your best bet is to place the unpeeled onion in the freezer for about 20 minutes, after which you simply take it out, peel it and cut it with a very sharp knife. It helps to chop in front of an open window. When you're chopping a large number of onions, use a food processor.
