Kikuyu grass is a fine-leafed creeping grass that prefers sandy soils and invades under heavy grazing. It is not very drought-tolerant. It forms a dense turf. The flowering stems are very short.

It is used in lawns in many urban areas and has a particularly long flowering season of six months, lasting from September to February.
