We could hear Denise from quite a distance as they were approaching our office – she was making babbling sounds for the entire world to hear!
Two things stood out during this appointment: firstly, she had grown quite a lot since we last saw her and was looking more and more like a little lady. Secondly, she was a lot more vocal than during other sessions – quite the opposite of the quiet child we saw the first time. This was a very good sign.

Liezl reported that she had started making new babbling sounds. She also had a very consistent localising response. Whenever a sound came from any direction other than the front, she would immediately turn towards the sound.
We had a beautiful demonstration of this when we redid the feedback test with her new earmoulds. She sat on daddy’s lap while we presented test sounds in her left ear. She immediately turned towards her mom (who was sitting on her left side) as if she wanted to ask: "What are you doing?"
Her grandfather also had an interesting story to tell. He has a large aviary at home. He took Denise to see the birds a few days after she was fitted with her hearing aids, but she started to cry – the sounds were new and overwhelming.
Now, however, she liked going with grandpa and listens attentively to the bird sounds.
Another positive sign is the fact that Denise keeps the hearing aids in her ears all day long – they are only removed during bath time and bed time.
We are very happy with Denise’s progress and will continue to monitor her closely. Denise’s family is also receiving family guidance on a regular basis at the Carel du Toit Centre in Pretoria.
