Busi Mashele (11) was born deaf. But thanks to a generous donation from Widex, this child recently received her first set of digital hearing aids.
This is a report from Brenda Schmid, who is guiding Busi's parents on their journey to helping their child:

Two big smiles
"On Tuesday 23 May, I met Busi and her mother at the Refilwe Clinic. This was our first Parent Guidance session together.
On meeting Busi and her mother outside the door, I couldn't help but notice the big smiles on both their faces. According to Mommy, the family couldn't believe the difference in Busi. What impressed her mother most, was the fact that they now only had to call Busi once, and she would come – no more shouting over and over again to get her attention.
During our time together, Busi gave clear indications that she heard: a door that banged somewhere down the passage (from the room we were sitting in, with the door closed), a soft cellphone sms tone, and the door opening softly behind her.
But certainly the most positive result was the significant increase in her verbal communication skills. Busi was communicating in clear one-word, sometimes even two-word, and once in three-word sentences. She imitated correctly within one or two tries and is very proud of her English and Sepedi words. I was certainly very proud of her. This little girl is very determined to talk, despite what the textbooks would suggest.
How best to help Busi
I spent some time with the resident speech therapist, Thembi, and we worked out how best to help Busi on a regular basis. Thembi will see Busi during break-time at school, so that we do not interrupt her schooling anymore than necessary. As Thembi resides in Pretoria, she has undertaken to visit the Centre for some clear guidelines as to how they should handle Busi.
From our side, we are going to send through some guidelines to the school to help them to accommodate Busi in the class, and some homework help programmes to assist with her school work. I will travel to Refilwe again on the 20th of June to meet Busi and her mother. I will help them take the next step on the long road of language learning that lies ahead.
Thank you once again to Widex and De Beers for your support and interest in this very special little girl’s life."
