Don't monkey around at a playground
Playgrounds are fun, but some playground toys can be dangerous for your children.

When the Consumer Product Safety Commission reviewed more than 200,000 playground injuries between 1990 and 1994, it found that almost 90 percent were on toys that had some form of climbing or height, including monkey bars/jungle gyms, swings and slides.

So the Harvard Medical School in Boston performed a study of monkey-bar injuries.

As reported in the journal, Pediatrics:

  • The riskiest age is about 6,
  • Boys are more likely to get hurt than girls,
  • And broken wrists and arms are the most common serious injuries.

Also, it doesn't matter whether the playground has adult supervision, and having a soft rubber mat under the monkey bars didn't seem to help, either.
