Kids and alcohol – a topic that’s been in the news due to shocking reports of an 8-year-old girl found drunk on the streets of Kraaifontein. While there’s no question that alcohol intoxication can be extremely dangerous in children, you might be wondering whether it’s okay for a child to have the odd sip of your wine.

While there are no hard and fast rules, a few sips of wine consumed under the watchful eye of a loving parent – at Sunday lunch, for instance – probably won’t cause any physical harm. In fact, it could form an important part of the socialisation and educational process. But care should always be taken. And it’s definitely not a good idea to introduce alcohol to a child younger than 12 - 14 years. Should accidental alcohol poisoning ever occur, it should be treated as a medical emergency. The child should be taken to the trauma unit of your nearest hospital immediately.
