If your toddler is scheduled for surgery, prepare your child for the hospital no more than a day ahead of time, advises Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Use these tips to guide your conversation:
Focus on what your child will see, hear, taste and feel at the hospital.
Offer realistic choices, such as which toy your child wants to bring along, or which ear he wants the nurse to look in first.
At the hospital, explain what the nurse or doctor is doing using terms your child understands; be as non-threatening as possible.
