Van die oorsake van depressie onder kinders in Suid-Afrika is oorerflike faktore, skooldruk van ouers, onderwysers of mede-skoliere, prestasiedruk deur ouers, onderwysers of skoolmaats, omgewingsfaktore waar stres in die gesin die kind benadeel, verlies aan ‘n troeteldier of ‘n maatjie wat verhuis.

Die kind ondervind dikwels eers aanpassingsprobleme, wat dan omskakel in depressie. In baie gevalle waar ‘n kind lees- of leerprobleme ondervind of aan Aandag-afleibaarheidsindroom ly, word die kind depressief omdat hy nie so goed soos sy skoolmaats kan presteer nie.

Die depressiewe kind se eerste klagtes is dikwels dié van hoofpyn of maagpyn wat natuurlik nie met behandeling verdwyn nie. Ouers se eerste klagte is dat hul kind erg geïrriteerd is.

Dit is baie belangrik om elke episode van depressie by kinders te diagnoseer en te behandel. Hoewel die siklus van ‘n depressie sowat 18 maande duur, waarna die kind/tiener of volwassene weer beter begin voel, is die langtermyngevolge van ‘n onbehandelde depressie groot. Die onbehandelde kind bly langer depressief, sy selfbeeld en waagmoed is in die grond, en dít is al byna genoeg om die volgende siklus van depressie te sneller. Voorts word die risiko om ‘n verdere depressie-aanval te kry telkens groter as die vorige een nie goed behandel en afgeweer word nie, is die mening van kindersielkundiges. – Yourhealth.co.za
