The contents of a travel first-aid kit depend on the destination. Here's a list of essential items you should take along with you:
- Malaria tablets.
- Water sterilisation tablets.
- Anti-diarrhoea medication like Imodium.
- Nausea and vomitting medication like Valoid, Stugeron or Avomine.
- Flu medication and cough syrup.
- Non-steroidal anti-inflammatories like Myprodol.
- Antihistamine tablets like Phenergan or Tavegyl.
- Broad-spectrum antibiotics.
- Sleeping pills if you struggle to sleep on the plane.
- Ointment containing acyclovir for fever blisters.
- Lip balm and sunscreen.
- Flashlight and extra batteries.
- Disposable aluminium foil blanket (available from outdoor and camping shops).
- Moleskin blister plasters.
- Snake bite kit if you're going to be in very remote areas.
- Sufficient amounts of prescription medication required by anyone in your group.
If you're going overseas, find out whether the country you're travelling to has any restrictions regarding the type and amount of medication you may carry. Some European countries, for example, have restrictions on medication containing codeine.
If you’re travelling to a remote area, it may be helpful to take some medications with you, in addition to the first aid kit. Speak to your pharmacist first. Some of these medications require a prescription.
