'Melting' fat with lasers before liposuction allows more fat to be removed, Colombian doctors report.
Using low-level laser energy to liquefy the fat before suctioning it out, doctors can remove up to 15 litres of fat, achieving weight loss of between five and twenty kilograms, Dr Rodrigo Neira of the Centro Médico Imbanaco told the IX International Symposium on Obesity.

Releasing fat from cells The process involves the infiltration of fluid, including an anaesthetic, into fatty regions. During and after this infusion, a low-level energy laser beam irradiates the areas externally for no more than 40 minutes.
The laser irradiation opens pores in adipose fatty tissue cells that release the fat into spaces between the cells. This fat is then suctioned out.
The technique allows up to 15 litres of fat to be removed without a blood transfusion, with an infection rate of 0.6%
The procedure is performed on an outpatient basis, and complete recovery takes about two months, Neira reported.
Ninety-nine percent of fat released Laboratory experiments by Neira and colleagues showed that six minutes of laser treatment released 99% of the fat from cells. Their results are scheduled to be published in the September issue of the journal Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery. - (Health24)
