Wilma reveals some of her eating habits to Health24:
H24: How many fruits do you eat per day?
Wilma: 3-4. I love summer fruits like watermelon and sweet melon. And I always have bananas nearby to counteract any drop in my sugar and energy levels.
H24: How many portions of veggies do you eat per day?
Wilma: 3-4, mostly raw salad type things like carrots for energy during the day. I love broccoli but I am not fond of starch like potatoes.
H24: How much protein do you eat per week? What is your preferences regarding red meat, chicken and fish.
Wilma: I eat very little red meat – only fillet or lamb chops. I do cooking with ostrich mince or ostrich fillet. I love free-range chicken, and I love fish, but only fresh fish. No frozen fish for me.
I find it difficult to find the time in our daily routine to prepare and eat the proteins I need. I also do venison – gemsbok and springbok. The bottomline is: it must be free-range and as low in fat as possible. I also eat yogurt once per day.
Do you have a sweet tooth?
Wilma: Ouch!! Very, very bad. I love good chocolate at night in bed!!!!! And I bake cake and fudge.
H24: Do you eat fatty foods and which are most tempting?
Wilma: Not really. But sometimes a McDonald's take-away is tempting.
Name your most and least favourite foods.
Wilma: I love all food – but not oysters or artichokes. I love Japanese, Italian and Chinese foods (although it can be oily sometimes).
Name your biggest food temptation
Wilma: Chocolate and red wine.

Goals -
Wilma needs to increase her fitness, energy and overall health.
-
She needs to lose 5 – 6kg in order to reach her goal weight which is 65 kg. She is now 71kg (was 62kg for years).
-
She carries most weight around her waist.
Previous diet
- 2 slices of toast brown or rye with margarine and cheese or Marmite; or Weetbix with full cream milk.
- Apple as a mid-morning snack.
- For lunch she should have a salad with olive oil, a sandwich, or just fruit.
- Fruit as a snack in the afternoon.
- She can enjoy a cooked meal for supper, but with no starches.
- Wilma has a weakness for chocolate and indulges around three times per week. This often happen in bed, late at night. This usually happens in bed late at night, almost like comfort eating.
New diet
Because Wilma is now exercising, we need to increase the energy content of her diet, especially during daytime. So instead of having just a salad at lunchtime, she also needs to have some bread with it.
She also needs more substantial snacks in between, such as two fruits and a yogurt mid-morning, and a fruit and crackers with cottage cheese mid pm. She can still minimise her carb intake at night-time.
