Throughout their childhood Amir uses his superiority to mock and at times exploit Hassan. Hassan remains loyal to Amir, even in the face of critical betrayals, like when Amir hides in fear as Hassan is beaten by bullies. During the war in Afghanistan, Amir and his father flee to America, leaving the servants behind.
Years later, during Taliban rule, Amir returns to Afghanistan in search of Hassan to make up for the past.
This book explores themes of friendship, the relationship between father and son and the harsh realities of war, both physical and psychological.
