One day Abeeda's friend invites her to go with her to the casino. Beginner's luck prevails, and she hits the jackpot. From this moment she is strongly drawn to the gambling, which is strongly prohibited by her religion.
Her gambling becomes a source of comfort for her after her gay son dies of Aids. The reader is taken through her cycle of guilt and shame around gambling and her religion. It's an interesting exploration about how freedom is a relative term, and how society's mores can be as destructive as they can be supportive.
