An elderly writer rents a damp cottage in the village of Great Calne in order to rewrite his former bestseller into a soap opera – a genre which he doesn't really understand. Getting down to the task at hand proves especially difficult as he becomes drawn into the daily dramas of village life. Much of what is happening reminds him at unexpected moments of the death of his only son.

This innocent-seeming tale gradually changes into something of universal significance on a grand and sweeping scale. Great Calne forms the somewhat mythical and magical backdrop to a tale that raises questions about the nature of love, good and evil. It's also about bereavement, the stresses of living in a modern world, and how people's inability to accept the past can cause anxiety and heartache in the present.
