Does it matter if your obstetrician is male or female? It may not make a difference medically, but many women have opinions on the subject just the same.
The Johns Hopkins School of Public Health surveyed 87 women after their first obstetrical visits, according to the May 1999 issue of Obstetrics and Gynecology.

The survey revealed that:
Male obstetricians spent about 20 percent more time with each patient than did female obstetricians;
The men were more careful about being certain the patients understood instructions;
The men spent more time making sure the patients were emotionally prepared for motherhood.
The result? The majority of women prefer female obstetricians. Maybe they think the women know something the men don't.
