You wake up with the migraine from hell and want to phone the GP and then you remember you don’t have one. Not since you moved to George from Roodepoort six months ago.

So what now? Check the phone directory and choose one at random, or do you phone a friend for a recommendation?

Migraines and other emergencies aside, it might be an idea to spend some time on finding the right GP. And while you’re about it, why not do the same if you need to choose a vet, a psychologist, a gynaecologist and the right pharmacy?

Life’s hard and we need all the sympathy and help we can get. When your cat is dying, or you have to have a Pap smear, or your flu has just turned into bronchitis, or you need grief therapy after a loved one has died, you need to feel that the health professionals you have chosen are really there for you.

Choose carefully – it’s worth it. And, after all, you’re paying for it. Find a medical practitioner in your area. (Susan Erasmus, Health24, November 2006)
