From 8 - 15 October 2006, ten selected women from all walks of life, whose lives have been affected by breast cancer, will ride BMW-sponsored motorcycles over a period of eight days, from Cape Town to Johannesburg to raise awareness for breast health.
Riding to raise awareness Over the course of the eight days the group will raise awareness by travelling through towns and rural communities, bringing their message of hope and build a supportive community with other people throughout the country.
At each of the towns various stakeholders will be educated about breast cancer with a specific focus on educating women from the communities in each of the areas.
Breast health issues, such as breast cancer, is the most common cancer in women in South Africa and is increasing in incidence. Breast cancer awareness among women of African descent, especially in rural areas, is insufficient. There is a great need to promote breast health and breast cancer awareness and the benefit of early detection.
The general public can also form part of this courageous endeavour by sending words of encouragement to the riders via SMS. Each SMS will cost R5,00 and the proceeds will be donated to the Breast Health Foundation.
The sender will also stand a chance to win a BMW motorcycle and many spot prizes e.g. gift hampers from Avon-Justine and Diana Carmichael. The number is 36655.
The Breast Health Foundation, sponsors and riders believe that “The Journey of Hope” will form the catalyst of an on-going campaign to combat ignorance about breast health and breast cancer, and bring hope to all those affected by it.
