Diabetic retinopathy results when fluctuating blood sugar levels and other effects of diabetes cause damage to blood vessels in the eye's retina. It can affect both type 1 and type 2 diabetics.

Weakened vessels in the eye often leak blood, which can appear as squiggles or dark spots on the eye to someone with retinopathy, the US National Eye Institute says. Left untreated, the condition can cause blindness.
The institute recommends an annual eye exam for every diabetic. More frequent visits may be needed if you've already been diagnosed with the condition. – (HealthDayNews)
