More than three million South Africans suffer from type 2 diabetes, and the incidence is increasing – with new patients getting younger. Research shows this type of diabetes is often part of a metabolic syndrome (X Syndrome), which includes high blood pressure and other risk factors for heart disease.

Take action:
If you have a family history of diabetes, are overweight or obese, and have high blood pressure or elevated cholesterol levels, you should have your glucose levels tested. Normal blood glucose readings are between 3,3 and 6 mmol/l, while fasting blood glucose (blood glucose measured before breakfast) of over 6,7 mmol/l on two separate occasions could indicate a problem.
