You’re allowed to wear a hat with a propeller on it. You’re even allowed to listen to the Backstreet Boys – on headphones. The one thing you’re not allowed to do in the 21st century workplace is be rude.

Even if you’re a librarian you’re likely to be confronted with – or inflict – workplace rudeness. Here are few ways to help defuse a potentially destructive situation.
Be nice: If you drink the last of the coffee, make another pot. Fill the paper tray, whether it’s empty or not. Ask a colleague if you can have a moment of their time, rather than simply launching into a conversation.
Set an example. If you’re the boss, you have the power – and the obligation – to set the tone. You’ll be watched constantly and your subordinates will take their cue from your attitude.
Find neutral ground. If a conflict develops, take the person involved for a cup of coffee.
Take a break. If you feel you’re about to lose your temper or be sarcastic or insulting, step out for a cup of coffee or a brisk walk. Ask yourself what the person is trying to say, rather than what they’ve said;
Confront constructively. Try to explain to your colleague that their behaviour is upsetting and counterproductive. This approach is far more likely to resolve the problem than talking to others about the problem.
Involve them. Look for a mutually beneficial solution, or at least on that you both agree on. Ask: “Can we find a solution that will work for both of us?” - William Smook, Health24
