Holford is one of the world’s foremost authorities on health and nutrition. In 1984, he founded the Institute for Optimum Nutrition (ION) in London, which is now one of the most highly respected training colleges for clinical nutritionists in the world.

He has written more than 20 health books - many of them international bestsellers - including Patrick Holford’s New Optimum Nutrition Bible and The Holford Low-GL Diet.

Food is better medicine than drugs
Now, Holford, together with award-winning UK medical journalist Jerome Burne, has written Food is Better Medicine than Drugs, which reveals how modern medicine has become distorted by the power of the pharmaceutical industry. The book will form the basis of Holford's seminars in South Africa in February and March 2007, and was recently launched to acclaim in the UK.

The book reveals just how heavily reliant the western world has become on prescription drugs. But many have side effects – all too often concealed – which include further illness and sometimes death.

Holford and Burne explain why food and food supplements can often treat chronic diseases more effectively than drugs – with none of the risks.

“This groundbreaking book is based on solid scientific evidence and illuminated with case histories. It will revolutionise the way you think about your health and put you – not the drug companies – in charge,” says Maria Ascencao, CEO of Bioharmony, the company bringing Holford to South Africa.

“It’s a book that will be of great interest to anyone with close friends or relatives suffering from conditions such as heart disease, diabetes, arthritis or depression,” adds Ascencao.

She says the book explains the drawbacks of the most common drug treatments and provides details of why nutrition and other non-drug approaches are nearly always safer and more effective.

Seminars around the country
Holford arrives in South Africa on February 19 to launch the book. He will also present Food as Medicineseminars around the country, which will provide invaluable insight into how nutrition can help the body operate at its full potential and protect it against disease and illness.

In addition, Holford will present his highly popular Fat Burner, Food for the Brain and Health Transformation workshops.

Seminars and workshops will take place at:

  • Johannesburg on February 22, 23 & 24
  • Durban on February 27 and 28
  • Cape Town on March 1, 2 & 3
