What is Pilates?

A definition
The Pilates exercise technique is a complete fitness method and when performed regularly, it positively changes bodies. It combines awareness of the spine, proper breathing and strength and flexible training.

Pilates is a system of movement and exercise that was developed in the 1920s. Originated by Joseph Pilates, the goal of the system is to strengthen and stretch the muscles while integrating the mind and body.

The history and mystery of Pilates
The story of the sickly child training with a vengeance to overcome a weak respiratory and musculo-skeletal disposition is fairly well reported in many articles written about Joseph Pilates.

What is less understood and far more intriguing, is the significance of his amazing insights, especially considering the paradigms of health and exercise that existed when he began his work. The real story is still unravelling like a mysterious tale.

A very popular alternative exercise
For years, the method has been used by professional dancers, professional athletes and in the last decade it has become popular in the mainstream.

Many physical therapists use the method to help improve everyday moving posture. Conditioning experts have seen its benefits and use it in the programmes of professional sports teams to create an edge over competitors.

Our own Springbok Rugby team use Pilates at their Plettenberg Bay Training Camp, dedicating a special training room for the use of Equilibrium Pilates Reformers, Chairs and Accessories (see Tools of the trade) in a Pilates based core stability training programme.
