From 8-15 October 2006, ten selected women from all walks of life, whose lives have been affected by breast cancer, will ride BMW-sponsored motorcycles over a period of eight days, from Cape Town to Johannesburg, to raise awareness for breast health.
Over the course of the eight days, the group will raise awareness by travelling through towns and rural communities, bringing their message of hope, and building a supportive community with other people throughout the country. At each of the towns, various stakeholders will be educated about breast cancer with a specific focus on educating women from the communities in each of the areas.
Breast health issues, such as breast cancer, is the most common cancer in women in South Africa, and is increasing in incidence. Breast cancer awareness among women of African descent, especially in rural areas, is insufficient. There is a great need to promote breast health and breast cancer awareness and the benefit of early detection.
The Breast Health Foundation, sponsors, and riders believe that Biking for Breast Health - A Journey of Hope will form the catalyst of an ongoing campaign to combat ignorance about breast health and breast cancer, and bring hope to all those affected by it.
The general public can also form part of this courageous endeavour by sending words of encouragement to the riders via SMS. Each SMS will cost R5,00; the proceeds will be donated to the Breast Health Foundation. The sender will also stand a chance to win a BMW motorcycle and many spot prizes such as gift hampers from Avon-Justine and Diana Carmichael. All SMSs can be sent to 36655, and should start with the word BIKE.
