Waxing

This is one of the best hair removal methods because it pulls the hair out by the roots and it takes about six weeks to grow back. It’s also great because no chemicals are used on the skin. If you wax frequently, many of the hairs eventually stop growing. However, you might still have hassles with ingrown hairs. If you can stand the pain, then this is the method for you!

It might be a good idea to have a professional beautician wax you for the first few times so that you get used to the pain. You can wax your back, chest, arms and legs. This method can also be used to get rid of a uni-brow.

How to give yourself a hot wax:

  • The first thing that you must do is read the manual and follow the instructions. Failure to do so could result in swelling, bruising and unnecessary pain.
  • When women go for a wax, their beauticians usually advise that they pop a painkiller beforehand. Not a bad idea, especially if you’re a waxing novice.
  • Hot wax is extremely flammable so keep it away from open flame and gas stoves.
  • If you have never waxed before, it is very important to do a sensitivity or allergy test first. Do this by waxing a small patch of skin, before attempting the entire area.
  • To avoid breaking out into a rash after waxing, use a pre-treatment, like a powder, beforehand so that the wax doesn’t stick to your skin when you try to pull it off.
  • Apply the wax evenly over the skin.
  • Apply the wax strips against the direction of the hair growth.
  • Before ripping off the wax strip against the direction of the hair growth, flick up a small section of wax at the base of the strip. Now firmly grip the raised bit and pull the strip away with a very brisk, upward motion.
  • Do not hesitate, this will only make it more painful.
  • Apply an anti-irritant lotion to the skin afterwards.
  • Apply an ice compress when you are finished. This will reduce the risk of sebaceous activity and prevent swelling.

Wise words of warning:

  • To recycle hot wax, heat the whole pot to 120 C and leave it for 40 minutes to sterilise the wax, before straining it.
  • Use fresh, clean wax on any facial hair.
  • Never use wax to remove your eyebrows, eyelashes, nose hair, ear hair or your genital hair (as if you’d ever even consider the latter option).
  • Never apply wax to sunburnt, chapped, cut or irritated skin.
  • Don’t wax over moles, warts or varicose veins.
