Q: At what age should one start brushing a child’s teeth?
A: As soon as the child’s first tooth is visible in the mouth, parents should start introducing an oral hygiene regimen. A piece of gauze or a damp cloth can be used to clean the teeth initially. Later, a soft toothbrush can be used. Ideally, teeth should be brushed after every meal to remove food and acid build-up. However, this is often a tall order and brushing the teeth thoroughly at least once a day is the next best thing.
Q: Which toothpaste is the best?
A: With so many brands of toothpaste on the market these days, parents are faced with a mind-boggling choice. The most important thing is not so much the type of toothpaste which is used but rather the amount that is applied to the toothbrush. Only a very small amount (pea-size) should be used.
Q: Should children take fluoride supplements?
A: If fluoride levels in the drinking water are low, fluoride supplements can be of value. However, as most brands of toothpaste contain fluoride these days, it is advisable not to give children fluoride supplements unless they are considered to be very high risk. Children under the age of four years are particularly at risk of developing fluorosis or “mottled teeth” due to excess fluoride intake. It is therefore advisable to consult your dentist before the decision is made to give children additional fluoride supplements.
