Breast cancer: signs and symptoms

With breast cancer being a major health problem in Australia, it's important for all women to be aware of the signs and symptoms.


Symptoms aren’t obvious in the early stages; you should seek advice if you notice any change in your breast. Later symptoms may include:

• Breast lumps: usually painless, but some cause a prickly sensation 
• Change in nipple appearance
• Unusual nipple discharge, especially blood-stained
• Change in breast skin
• Lump or swelling under arm

Occasional symptoms include:

• Breast swelling
• Vague breast discomfort
• Breast pain or tenderness
• Change in breast contour, texture or temperature
