A total of 34,029 cases of HIV had been diagnosed in Australia since the first diagnoses in 1982. There are currently more than 25,700 people in Australia living with HIV, most of which are men.
This is according to the 2013 Annual Surveillance Report of HIV, viral hepatitis and STIs, published by the Kirby Institute statistics for the year ending December 2012.
• In 2012, 1,253 people were diagnosed with HIV.
• Of those diagnosed in Australia in 2012, 190 (15.2%) had previously been diagnosed with HIV overseas.
• HIV continues to be transmitted primarily among men who have sex with men.
• Of all HIV diagnoses made between 2007 and 2011:
- 67% of transmissions occurred in homosexual men
- 25% of transmissions were attributed to heterosexual sex
- 2% of transmissions were attributed to injecting drug use
- 6% of transmissions were undetermined
