How to visit a sex shop

Whether it’s the tightly stacked rows of X-rated magazines and movies, tubes of singles-serve lubrication, dildos in sizes, textures and colours for every appetite, or the signage that says “private viewing booth”, you’re bound to see something you won’t soon forget when you visit a sex shop.

But many people wouldn’t be caught dead in one of these shops through fear of being spotted by someone they know. Truth is, if someone you know spots you there, they’ll also be worried about what you think. Or they don’t actually care.

So, if you haven’t managed to visit a sex shop yet, and you want to, here are a few tips on etiquette:

Do:
  • Feel confident walking into a sex shop.
  • Prepare to see someone you know (it probably won’t happen, but just in case).
  • Remember that sex is a basic human need and that everyone is doing it.
  • Take a friend along if you’re shy.
  • Go alone if you want privacy.
  • Visit with you partner if you want to spice things up at home.
  • Ask questions. That’s why the shop assistant is there.
  • Expect high prices.
  • Ask to see products out of their packaging.
  • Do leave satisfied.

Don’t:
  • Forget to carry proof of age.
  • Giggle like a school girl.
  • Pass judgment on other shoppers or the products on the shelves.
  • Comment on or point at other people’s purchases.
  • Dress inappropriately just because it’s a sex shop.
  • Hit on the staff.
  • Break the sample items or make lewd actions with them.
  • Stare at other shoppers.
  • Rub your crotch or breasts while browsing, unless it’s an itch.
  • Forget to enjoy yourself.

There’s nothing wrong with sex shops. After all, when you’re hungry, you visit a grocery shop; and when you need clothing, you visit a fashion store. So it stands to reason that when you want to spice things up in the bedroom, you should visit a sex shop.
