Premier: abstain sex until 23

High school pupils must abstain from sex until the age of 23, Eastern Cape premier Noxolo Kiviet said.

"Sex is enjoyment for two minutes and that two minutes can adversely affect your entire life. My plea to you is delay having sex until you are 23," she said at the Booysens Park High School in Port Elizabeth.

Kiviet said that at 23, students could be at university and mature enough to make good decisions.

"People die before time and at 23 you will know what to do to not get infected with HIV. It is up to you to take advice," she said, adding that life expectancy was going down as a result of HIV/Aids.

The premier was at the school to hand over two new data projectors and two screens which she promised to buy for the school earlier this year.

Rife with drugs and poverty

Booysens Park High School is in the northern area of Port Elizabeth, where crime, drug use and poverty are rife.

The premier adopted the northern areas as a focus area for her office after she saw the conditions under which the people were living.

She will go to the Chapman High School in Gelvandale to hand over a 620m security fencing project which she had promised to erect.

Kiviet deviated from her programme to address a group of protesters who were burning tyres nearby. She told the protesters that the Nelson Mandela metro municipality had built a lot of houses.

"We cannot build houses all at once. We must not behave as if we do not know that houses are built, and burning tyres will not help you," she said before urging them to attend community meetings to get information about housing delivery and other developments in their area.
