A sex doll revolution

Meet Jenny. She’s blond, gorgeous and extremely willing. She's also made of silicone and costs a fair whack.

For $6,000 she is yours to do with as you please, fulfilling your wildest and weirdest sexual fantasies without ever uttering a contrary word. And that’s $6,000 for life, not just for a night.

You see, Jenny isn't a high-class call girl or a Russian mail-order bride, she's a "love doll" sold by RealDoll.

A tasteless joke?

I don't know about you, but I've always thought of sex dolls as a tasteless joke. The kind of thing you embarrass your best mate with at his bachelor's party. Just the thought of blowing up a life-sized rubber woman leaves me nauseatingly light-headed and the idea of actually having sex with it seems preposterous.

Besides the fact that I reckon it's impossible to "have sex" with an inanimate object - it's really just masturbation with technical assistance - the sensation of sexual intercourse with an inflatable "woman" must surely be akin to bonking a plastic lilo on the high seas.

A revolution in the sex doll industry

Well, it turns out that in recent years there has been a revolution in the sex doll industry that's passed me by entirely. For starters there's no blowing-up. Jenny and her kin are manufactured using Hollywood special effects technology. They have fully articulated skeletons covered in silicone that provides that "flesh-like feel".

RealDolls are customisable to your exact specifications. You get to choose from ten different body types and 16 interchangeable faces and you can select the style and colour of her eyes, lips, eye liner, eye shadow, hair, fingernails and, naturally, pubic hair. The somewhat limited range of skin tones, from "fair" to "light African", is a bit of a disappointment, but "realistic tan lines" and smurf-blue skin a la Avatar are available. For the more adventurous, there are elf ears and several intriguing "shemale" options.

The website makes for some interesting reading and since you may not want to risk visiting it on your work computer, here are some particularly enlightening excerpts:

  • "Female RealDolls have 3 entries for penetration", and yes, there are male versions as well. They have – you guessed it – two "entries".
  • "When penetrated, a vacuum is formed inside the doll's entries which provides a powerful suction effect".
  • "You can pose your doll in most positions an average person can achieve without pain".
  • Your RealDoll comes with a cleaning kit and "should preferably be stored hanging in a neutral position, with legs slightly spread, from the provided neck bolt".

How charming!

Little better than necrophilia

Some would contend that Jenny has many advantages over real, flesh-and-blood women. She's guaranteed never to suffer from headaches, won't expect you to remember your anniversary or insist on post-coital pillow talk.

On the down-side, most of us would probably find it rather challenging to form a meaningful emotional bond with her. That's because real-life people aren't customisable. They come with quirks and all manner of design faults which make them interesting and loveable.

To me, sex dolls represent the ultimate in men objectifying women and so-called sex with a rubber statue will always remain rather pathetic - just a step up from necrophilia, really - no matter how realistic the doll. But who am I to prescribe what others do in the comfort of their own home?

So if you have closet space and $6,000 dollars plus shipping to spare, treat yourself to the rubber woman of your dreams. - (Andrew Luyt, Health24, March 2010)
