A Western Cape public hospital plans to tag babies electronically in its bid to fight baby-snatching, The Cape Times newspaper reported.
If the security measure is implemented, Tygerberg Hospital would become the first public health facility to use the tag.
The device looks like a plaster. It would get automatically activated if the baby is removed from a certain area.
The infrastructure for the plan was expected to be completed next year.
Life Kingsbury Hospital in Claremont is one of the few private facilities using the tags, and has been using this system for years, according to hospital spokesperson Regan Beukes.
There were several baby-snatching incidents from maternity wards in the country's hospitals in recent years.
