A 19-year-old woman whose son was found wandering on the N1 freeway near the Grasmere offramp appeared in the Vereeniging Magistrate's Court on Monday, said Gauteng traffic police.

The case was postponed to April 15, said spokeswoman Busaphi Nxumalo.

"She is charged with attempted murder and child abandonment."

The woman, who was originally from Orange Farm, remained in police custody.

She was arrested on Friday night after her 16-month-old boy escaped being hit by a truck while walking along the freeway on Thursday.

Nxumalo said it was suspected that the child had been left there as there were no houses nearby.

Traffic police patrolling the N1 noticed a truck swerve and then saw the child walking on the freeway at around 7pm.

The toddler was taken to a place of safety.
