Keeping things cool

Your fridge is packed with bone-boosting dairy foods. How long will these foods stay fresh? This guide will give you a rough idea, assuming, of course, that your fridge is in good working order and that a temperature of 4 degrees Celsius is maintained.

Take action:

Pasteurised fresh milk – 1 to 5 days beyond the "sell-by" date; evaporated milk (opened) – 1 week; cultured buttermilk (closed) – 2 weeks; regular cream (closed) – 1 week; sour cream (closed) – 2 weeks; yoghurt (covered) – 7 to 10 days; soft custards – 5 to 6 days; hard cheese – 6 to 12 weeks; cheese spreads – 3 to 4 weeks; cottage cheese – 7 days after "sell-by" date.
