Shake the salt habit

It's World Salt Awareness Week. Why the fuss, you may ask? The increased intake of salt in our diets in recent years has been linked to an increase in hypertension (high blood pressure).

Research shows that us South Africans consume up to 3 times the recommended daily intake of 5 grams per day.

How can we reduce our intake and decrease our risk of hypertension?
  • Choose snacks that are unsalted or lower in salt
  • Read labels and nutritional tables to learn about the levels of salt in different foods
  • Limit the use of salt in cooking, and rather use natural flavourings such as fresh herbs, garlic, ginger, lemon juice, curry powder & chillies
  • Make it a habit to taste your food before adding salt, you may not need it!
