14 September is National Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder Day. Many children and parents struggle with ADHD. While nutrition is not the only factor in this disorder, it can play a significant role.
A healthy and food intake can help children to cope and concentrate at school. Merely having a good breakfast goes a long way - children should be eating a breakfast with a starch and protein, such as toast with peanut butter or egg; or a low-GI cereal such as muesli or oats porridge with milk or yoghurt. Regular snacks are important, but these should not be refined snacks (e.g. sweets, sugar-rich drinks or chocolate). A fruit and yoghurt is a great choice for a mid-morning snack.
