Pondering the low-carb lifestyle

If this is all new to you (which is unlikely), Professor Tim Noakes' book The Real Meal Revolution is, and I quote from the sleeve, as there is no better way of putting it: "part myth-busting scientific thriller, part mouth-watering cookbook".

The collaborators are a formidable team, consisting of a scientist (Prof Tim Noakes), a nutritionist (Sally-Ann Creed) and two super fit chefs (David Grier and Jonno Proudfoot).

The book is based on the concept of "Banting " – the LCHF (low carbohydrate high fat) diet named after William Banting, who became known for drastically reducing his weight the LCHF way. In the book you'll find chapter headings such as "Insulin, the devil within" and "Fat is your friend".

The authors maintain we've been lied to about fats, and that everyone, despite the fact that people have been cutting it out of their diets, is still getting fatter by the day. They oppose counting calories as a way of eating, and say you must, as we did 100 years ago, eat when we are hungry. Their focus is very much on appetite control vs. calorie control.

Sound controversial? It certainly is, and it's also not without its conspiracy theories either – are its opponents really the grain industry, looking after their own interests? And what about all the global warming that happens when cows, sheep and pigs, our new main food source, 'do their thing' in the pastures?

Whoever's right and whoever's wrong will certainly be proven by history, depending on which way the public goes.
