It may be almost the end of the year but it’s a new beginning for me at Health24, South Africa’s premier health and wellness website. And I’m proud as punch to be part of it.

My name is Laura van Niekerk and almost a decade ago I was one of the founding team members of the fun and funky Women24.com. Later I became the editor of that site as well as Food24.com before leaving for the Middle East and later India to join my husband in bumping up that retirement fund of ours.
In 2009 we returned to SA and I took over the huge job of creating digital properties for Woolworths TASTE magazine – a job I absolutely relished to the extent that I am now permanently on Health24’s Diet and Nutrition section to find that ever elusive easy way to lose weight.
Health, especially natural health, has been my passion and while in India I completed a correspondence course in holistic nutrition, a field of wellness that some regard as the devil’s spawn while others embrace it like a new religion.
With the rising cost of health care, more and more people are turning to natural ways to heal what ails them, only to find that there is a plethora of products and (mis)information out there. Some if it downright dangerous.
Over the coming months Birgit, our Diet, Nutrition and Natural Health Editor, and I hope to help you sift through the noise to bring you scientifically proven natural health therapies to augment our medical solutions so that you can make a responsible choice.
In other news, it’s Movember! That means a giant, if hairy, focus on men’s health, specifically prostate and testicular cancer.

Then, it’s really sad to have to tell you that Dr Anrich Burger, our CyberDoc, passed away on Saturday. Dr Burger, a Health24 expert for over 6 years, was a quadriplegic and succumbed to severe neuropathic pain and other complications. Read his fiancée, Jacqueline Mostert’s touching letter. We will miss him tremendously.
