Infections of the outer ear canal (otitis externa) can be very painful and easily confused with middle ear infections.

Pressing on the area just in front of the ear (called the tragus) or pulling the ear, will worsen the pain if the external ear canal is affected. Keep the external ear dry and void of any water as this may worsen the infection.
