If you suspect you may have conjunctivitis and want to self-medicate, make sure the antibacterial drops do not contain a steroid (like dexamethasone).

If the infection is due to a dendritic ulcer (a herpes eye infection) steroids will make matters worse and may even cause serious harm to your eye.
