The DA on Thursday welcomed the establishment of the Office of Health Standards Compliance to monitor norms and standards for health care delivery.

"I look forward to inspectors arriving unannounced at hospitals to assess key aspects like cleanliness, medicine availability and staff attitudes," said Democratic Alliance MPL Jack Bloom.

"These inspectors must have teeth to enforce compliance." BDlive reported earlier that Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi unveiled the board of the new office on Wednesday.

It consisted of health care professionals, academics and activists.

BDlive reported that it would be chaired by Lizo Mazwai, former chairman of the SA Medical Research Council.Other members included Simon Lebala SC, and Treatment Action Campaign activist Vuyiseka Dubula-Majola.

Motsoaledi said his department wanted to improve the quality of health care.

Bloom said the group should ensure there were consequences for non-performance.

He also wanted all inspection reports to be made public so that progress could be assessed.
