Cape Town Marathon 2014

The prestigious 42.2km Cape Town Marathon will take place on 5 February 2014.

Every great city in the world opens its streets once a year, welcoming residents and visitors to celebrate the unfailing spirit of human endeavour. For one day, we the people replace the car as we celebrate the purest and simplest of all physical activities – running.

The marathon is the ultimate challenge of human endurance, a test for true champions and the average jogger who wants to conquer the classic Olympic distance. The marathon is where Capetonians celebrate their common love of sport, fun and the city.

The City of Cape Town, enthusiastically led by Mayor Patricia de Lille, is partnering with Western Province Athletics (WPA), along with Elana Meyer of Endurocad and Francois Pienaar of ASEM Running, to stage an iconic city marathon befitting the great city of Cape Town.

Activities that will be featured

The aim of the City is to stage and develop the premier city marathon on the African continent, a marathon that in years to come will take its rightful place as one of the worlds “must run” marathons. To be held in spring, this world class event will consist of:

- The prestigious 42.2km Cape Town Marathon, weaving its way through the historic city and its beautiful seafront, at the foot of inspiring Table Mountain

- The 10km Cape Town Freedom / Peace Run around the world famous Waterfront and past our 4 Nobel Peace Prize-winners

- The 4,2km mini-marathon & 5k m Fun Run [a celebration of running as 'fun and freedom' for all ages]

All work and no play makes for a dull day, so you’ll be able to enjoy one of the many fun events  planned, including supporter zones, fancy-dress prizes, beer gardens, food stalls, live music and a festive atmosphere like only Cape Town can create.

Funds for charity

To balance the effort and the fun, the event will primarily raise funds for charity, will be run on sustainable and green principles, the safety of competitors and spectators will be ensured, there will be easy and safe access, ample parking, a competitive yet beautiful route, and a chance to belong to the greater Cape Town running community by having access to on-line support in the form of training tips, nutritional information, coaching and training programmes.

So, come on citizens Cape Town, we already have one of the greatest cycle tours on earth – if you can put one foot in front of the other, can you afford not to be a part of creating one of the greatest marathons on earth?

Stay tuned for more information – the official launch of the new vision for this race along with its new route will take place on 5th February 2014.
