Inflammation is the body's natural response when exposed to bacteria or tissue injury. However, if not addressed correctly it could lead to serious health complications.

The impact of inflammation on the body ranges from pain, heat, redness and swelling to a loss of function.

Although the symptoms of inflammation are hostile, it is indicative of the body’s healing process. Only when inflammation is reduced can the body recover from an injury or exposure to bacteria.

However, if inflammation is not addressed correctly it could lead to serious health complications.

What is inflammation?

Inflammation is essentially a protective response intended to eliminate the initial cause of cell injury. It is the body’s natural mechanism to fight infection, and can lead to chronic inflammation if it persists for too long, causing tissue damage.

Chronic inflammation is the term given to an unhealthy overactive inflammatory response that can linger for months or even years.

While inflammation is typically associated with wound care, post-operative care, joint injury and chronic joint conditions such as arthritis, the truth is that the source of all ailments and degenerative conditions are inflammatory in nature.

These include conditions of all our internal and external organs including our joints, muscles, skin, heart, lungs, liver, bladder, thyroid, prostate, uterus, teeth, brain, ears, eyes, large intestine, small intestine, gallbladder, pancreas, stomach, kidneys and organs of the immune system like lymph nodes, spleen, mucous membranes and tonsils.

From life threatening diseases to the dreaded aging process to which we are all susceptible – all of these can be attributed to inflammation.

Fighting inflammation with Buchu

It has been shown that extracts of the Buchu plant (oil distillate and the watery extract) are able to switch off the genes which lead to the release of inflammatory markers/factors from the cells that are involved in inflammation.

There are two types of cells: those that are involved during the acute phase of inflammation (called neutrophils) as well as those which infiltrate the tissue during the chronic inflammatory process.

The neutrophils have to leave the blood circulation in order to migrate into the tissues when a trigger is released by the injured tissues. Buchu is able to prevent this process, thereby preventing the swelling and pain normally felt during this process.  In other words, Buchu is able to prevent the onset of inflammation.

If, however, an inflammatory process is already afoot, Buchu is able to help as well.

It switches off the cells operating during the chronic inflammation phase (called monocytes). The monocytes are activated to release soluble factors and the Buchu actually switches off the genetic code that makes these factors.

The factors released by the monocytes are directly responsible for the damage caused at the site (bone erosion, fibrosis etc.).
